ABSTRACT
The study of fortresses is a many faceted activity. Apart from the popular architectural, technical and archaeological approaches, they also invite investigation into their strategic, operational and institutional implications. These things have recently been pushed rather into the background, but they are nevertheless at the very heart of what fortresses are about.
