ABSTRACT

Ulyanovsk Oblast is situated in the Volga Highlands. The Republic of Mordoviya, the Chuvash Republic and the Republic of Tatarstan lie to the north. There are also borders with Samara, Saratov and Penza Oblasts in the south-east, south, and west, respectively. The region occupies 37,181 sq km (14,356 sq miles). At January 2017 its population was an estimated 1,252,887 and the population density 33.7 per sq km. Some 75.0% of the population lived in urban areas. The administrative centre, Ulyanovsk, had an estimated population of 624,518 in January 2017. The other major city is Dimitrovgrad (116,055). Of those oblast residents who stated their ethnicity at the 2010 census, 73.6% were Russian, 12.2% were Tatar, 7.7% Chuvash and 3.2% Mordoviyan. The Oblast is in the time zone UTC+3.
