ABSTRACT
Novgorod Oblast is situated in the north-west of the Eastern European Plain. Tver Oblast lies to the south-east, Pskov Oblast to the south-west, and Leningrad and Vologda Oblasts lie to the north. The Oblast covers 54,501 sq km (21,043 sq miles). At January 2017 its population was an estimated 612,522 and its population density 11.2 per sq km. Some 70.8% of the population lived in urban areas. The region’s administrative centre is Velikii (Great) Novgorod (also known as Novgorod), with an estimated population of 222,594 in January 2017. Of those oblast residents who stated their ethnicity at the 2010 census, 95.1% were Russian and 1.2% were Ukrainian. Novgorod Oblast is in the time zone UTC+3.
