ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to discuss whether and to what extent citizenship of the European Union (EU) has been affected by the commitment to a ‘highly competitive social market economy’, by now enshrined in Article 3 TEU. Is EU citizenship being constructed in a way which satisfactorily takes into account social concerns?
