ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the different types of transmedia games that have evolved over the past 20 years, classifying them in terms of the principle mechanics and aesthetics that they have deployed. I argue that there is a clear distinction to be made between transmedia games and transmedia play. The axis of difference is the extent to which transmedia games extend existing storyworlds, brands, or text for promotional or profit motivations, whereas instances of transmedia play experiment with genre conventions and media forms which provides a richer space for innovation, political engagement, social activism, player creativity, and participation.
