ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to analyze the narrative forms and augmented storytelling modes applied to contemporary American television series and to grasp these approaches in terms of serialized narrative in the context of broader and coherent narrative universes. I will use the example of the science-fiction series Battlestar Galactica as a central focus. Battlestar Galactica is a series that unfolds beyond the television screen, as its narrative universe is composed of comic books, web-series, novels, games, and television movies. The sum of these platforms and narrations build the narrative universe of the series and deepen the characters. I will break down the transmedia strategies utilized into three conceptual categories: character-based transmedia, time-based transmedia, and world-based transmedia.
