ABSTRACT

The chapter examines the relationship between relativism and hinge epistemology. It first examines the connection between Wittgenstein’s On Certainty and relativism, in two possible senses of the term. Namely, relativism of distance (or of difference) and relativism as characterized by faultless disagreement. While the issue is moot, the chapter argues that On Certainty overall does not support either form of relativism. It then turns to an assessment of the relationship between several contemporary versions of hinge epistemology and relativism, reaching a similar verdict.
