ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates the foundational richness and broad application of the gender equality regime as a core concept in research on the European Union (EU). Over the last 25 year, the “gender equality regime” has significantly guided the direction of feminist research agendas representing a foundational and vibrant paradigm. It allows for the systematic analysis of the interaction of central policies, actors, institutions, and discourses, designed to mitigate against women’s inequality. Thematically, the majority of research focuses on employment, family, and care work in the EU or its member states. Yet, more broadly this research also covers policies and power relations regarding violence, abortion, migration, race, ethnicity, representation, sexuality etc.
