ABSTRACT

In June 2007 tens of thousands of protesters gathered in the small German town of Heiligendamm. Under the slogan of ‘make capitalism history: shut down the G-8’, ‘broad networks of direct actionists, anti-racist groups, anti-border groups, anti-fascist militants, queer activists, squatters, debt-relief groups, trade unions, environmental organizations and many others’ protested against globalization during the meeting of the leaders of the G8 economies; a couple of thousand anarchist and left-and right-wing militants turned what had been a peaceful protest into a violent melee.1
