Traditionally, scholars have focussed on warfare when explaining how the Templars and Hospitallers pursued their aims of securing pilgrim access to the Holy Land and protecting the Latin states. 2 In contrast, this study asks how these military orders promoted Frankish security by helping to make peace as negotiators and participants in treaties. 3
