ABSTRACT
As pointed out by Salvatore Bono in his latest research on early modern Mediterranean slavery, the practice and mechanisms of slave conversion have received little scholarly attention. 1 This observation holds true where the Hospitallers and their Muslim slaves were concerned. The aim of this paper is to highlight a number of as yet unexploited primary sources from the Maltese Hospitaller period which allow for a preliminary inquiry into the subject.
