ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines personal strategies to reduce the effects of implicit bias. First, four methods to interfere with implicit bias are introduced and discussed: decision-making supports, intergroup contact, mindfulness, and counter-stereotypical exemplars. Subsequently, a series of 14 strategies are introduced and related to these methods in order to provide readers with a robust toolkit of individual implicit bias remediation and removal techniques that they can use in their day-to-day life as educators and individuals. Finally, a table of Strategy Shortcuts is presented to help educators to begin their implicit bias self-intervention process.
