ABSTRACT
I think two designers absolutely changed the course of British Theatre design: one was Jocelyn [Herbert] and the other was John Bury. Before them most designers were encouraged to wrap up the pill in a lot of fancy paper, but John and Jocelyn affected a whole generation of designers and directors and made them insist on the question, “It may be nice, but is it necessary?”
