ABSTRACT
Older women have been of interest to academics and researchers from a wide array of disciplines for many years. One reason for this is their larger representation in the older population. They outnumber men within the population that is over 65 years of age. And they become an ever larger proportion of the older population as we consider the middle-old and old-old age groups: more than two of every three people over 75 years of age are women, and nearly four of every five people over 85 are women (Social Security Administration, 1998).
