Look at the screengrab in Figure 8.1. This woman’s picture appeared in an October 2014 photo essay in the online site of the British newspaper the Guardian (Chaim 2014). Do you want to look at the woman – or do you want to look away? Do you find yourself examining her chest or scanning her eyes? If you learn that she is a Syrian refugee who was attacked with acid in her hometown, do you want to know more, or is it enough to know that?
