On the level of groups, identity spells similarity between some, and difference from the rest. The We, the Self, has to be continuously limned off from the Other. One obvious way of representing the Other is as conquered by and at the mercy of the Self. I want to chart how this has been done historically in visual stone media – palettes, narrative reliefs, monuments. The point made is a basic one: predicating the identity of the Self on suborning Others may seemingly prop up self identity, but it also produces anxiety.
