ABSTRACT
In this commentary I want to describe my own experience in trying to achieve an understanding of close relationships, their provisions, and the consequences of their absence. As I reconstruct this experience, I am impressed by the extent to which my work was directed and informed by the work of others. I want then to consider ways in which published research reports can be incomplete in their effort to contribute to understanding and in need of augmentation, perhaps by the work of others.
