ABSTRACT

This chapter on non-market strategy in Brazil provides both a context for market dynamics in Brazil and case examples of the institutional voids that require the most navigation. We expose the expropriation risks present in this complex corporate, legal, social, and political environment (Musacchio 2008; Perkins, Morck and Yeung 2014; Perkins and Zajac 2013; Schneider 2008) and show how foreign fi rms could benefi t by developing a jeitinho Brasileiro, a Portuguese term that we use throughout this chapter which translates as “the Brazilian way of doing things.” With the implementation of appropriate non-market strategies, a foreign investor can successfully navigate the tendentious institutional environment for which Brazil has become infamous.
