ABSTRACT

The 2011 United Nations High Level meeting on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) was convened due to the growing international alarm about the threat to health, development and economies posed by these diseases. The political statement issued on behalf of over 110 participant nations resolved to develop effective programmes to prevent and control NCDs. Later, the fi nal report of the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development also highlighted that NCDs are a challenge to sustainable development.
