Introduction

The word romantic did not exist until the middle of the seventeenth century. During the first 150 years that it was used, its connotation changed from negative to positive. The same change occurred in recent history. During the first half of the twentieth century, the word romantic had a negative connotation, in both its scholarly and its popular use. After midcentury, it began to acquire a positive connotation.
