The title of this chapter should not be interpreted to mean that older homosexuals have inherent psychological problems. Instead, the problems discussed here refer to problems that this segment of the American population often endures because of the conditions imposed on them by society. Older homosexual employees as a group can be said to be in a “double whammy” category, because they are the target of two common types of discrimination: age discrimination and sexual orientation discrimination. The problems they may experience are not unique to them and may be experienced by younger homosexual employees or by older heterosexual employees. However, the intensity of the problems may be greater and the strategies for coping with the problems may be different for persons who are both older and homosexual.
