STATE RESPONSES TO CHILD MALTREATMENT

ABSTRACT This article briefly reviews state responses to child maltreatment. First, the magnitude and extent of the problem of child maltreatment is reviewed. There follows a discussion of how states have addressed the problem through reporting laws and special courtroom procedures. The limits of state approaches to child maltreatment are discussed and the potential for an increased federal role in establishing child maltreatment policy is considered.
