ABSTRACT

Long Term Care (LTC) refers to a range of health and supportive services for individuals who have lost some capacity for self-care due to a chronic illness or condition and who are expected to need care for an extended period. Long term care services can be provided either formally — by individuals or agencies who are paid for their services, or informally — by relatives or others who provide the services without compensation. The theoretical framework for the development of formal and primary group services to the elderly will make up part of the introduction to this guide. Although this guide is designed to provide an overview of the key information to be incorporated in any curriculum which focuses on the continuum of long term care, more extensive teaching notes and bibliographic information, including appendices which correspond with the session notes, can be obtained by contacting the author directly.
