ABSTRACT
SUMMARY. This article will consider varying societal responses to infertility over different periods of time. The role of religion, in articular, will be identified as a powerful influence on human beaviors surrounding fertility and infertility. The special consequences of infertility for women will also be examined. This historical perspective is useful in that deeply-rooted societal expectations continue to shape the fertility and infertility experiences of contemporary couples.
