ABSTRACT

The term internationalization is pervasive in institutions of higher education. This chapter examines internationalization and its related terms namely international education and intercultural learning. Intercultural learning is one component of international education and it is arguably the most difficult element to develop and deliver on university campuses. The chapter discusses three specific aspects of internationalization that have been subjected to criticism within the academy: international rankings and partnerships, international student mobility, and intercultural learning. Universities have always engaged in international partnerships either for the purpose of research or student mobility. World university rankings contribute to a growth of publicly available knowledge about the higher education industry that was not easily available prior to their rise and the spread of the Internet. Hence, universities are working to increase global and cross-cultural competencies among their students, international student mobility is on the rise, and there is a heightened emphasis on world university rankings and partnerships.
