ABSTRACT

Higher education is fundamental for providing effective learning experiences critical for both the students themselves and the society, which increasingly relies on every individual to participate productively in the economy, the democracy, and the global village. Florida's newly implemented performance-based budgeting measures also appropriate monetary rewards to community colleges largely based on student degree completions. Colleges and universities have established intervention programs, retention specialists, and tutoring centers as they seek to increase their retention and graduation rates. Academic support centers, aka tutoring centers, are in demand especially at urban two and four-year colleges that have high enrollment of underrepresented students. Another approach that would most likely guarantee higher graduation rates is for institutions to be very selective and limiting in their admission process. Responsibilities may include coming to every class, arriving on time and staying for the entire class, working cooperatively in small groups, buying the book and preparing for class.
