ABSTRACT

In recent years, there has been a great development in Chilean literature for young people, with the emergence of authors with new styles. The accompanying illustrations are of superb quality, and have become recognized internationally. New publishers with creative ideas have emerged. Conferences, seminars, courses, workshops and book fairs dedicated to children’s and young peoples’ literature are occurring continually. Specialized magazines have emerged, as have institutions dedicated to promoting the field. Foreign writers and specialists have come to Chile to share their experiences. Children’s Literature has appeared in academic curricula, including various universities offering a Master’s degree in Children’s and Young People’s Literature. It appears that academics, publishers, teachers, librarians and parents have come to understand that it is during childhood that people develop a love of reading. As such, it is necessary to produce popular, high-quality books that help children’s appreciation and a sense of self-fulfillment.
