ABSTRACT
Whoever wants to clearly understand the present needs to know the past that has led to it. This is why an ‘International Handbook of Outdoor Studies’ cannot avoid investigating the historical conditions, even if they seem a little outdated, which have contributed to the development of the cultural pattern of ‘Natursuche’ (the quest for nature), which can be seen as one of the most important roots of the outdoor movement.
