ABSTRACT
The notion that psychopathy is an immutable personality disorder has lingered long in the literature after Hervey Cleckley's (1941, 1988) now classic monograph on the disorder, The Mask of Sanity, was published. Cleckley noted that psychopaths did not seem to benefit from treatment, nor were they able to develop the emotional attachment required for effective psychotherapy.
