ABSTRACT

In order to achieve and sustain high levels of employee performance over time, organizations worldwide need to continually strive to find the best ways to set goals, coach and give feedback, evaluate work and distribute rewards (DeNisi, Varma, & Budhwar, 2008). This chapter explores the key challenges of managing performance in global organizations. We begin by discussing performance management systems (PMSs) in multinational enterprises (MNEs), followed by a discussion of the global context, with special reference to national culture. We then discuss two key determinants of individual performance – motivation, and supervisor-subordinate relation ships. Finally, we discuss the unique features of PMSs for expatriates, followed by a brief introduction to PMSs in three leading economies – namely USA, China, and India.
