ABSTRACT
Migration and development (M&D) are interconnected and remittances are the most tangible aspect that connects these two. Migration has been part of the development and evolutionary process of human beings, and warfare, conquest, formation of nations, emergence of states/empires and the search for new economic opportunities have all led to both voluntary and forced migration (Hatton and Williamson 2005; IOM 2013; Castles et al. 2014). In the early ages of migration, there was limited contact between those in the country of origin and migrants after departure and remitting behaviour became prominent with the availability, and the declining cost, of transportation and information exchange.
