ABSTRACT
In this chapter, issues of environment and resource use in rural areas are examined in the light of a set of dramatic shifts in the place of the rural in the global north. These shifts are partly the result of short-term shocks arising from multiple crises accumulating since 2008 and yet are also triggered by wider shifts and challenges in the relationship between society and the environment on a planetary scale.
