ABSTRACT

This chapter is a means of provoking the reader's thoughts on the concept of ‘career’. It aims to do this in the following way:

by acknowledging that there are multiple perspectives on ‘career’, both within the literature and also via individual subjective notions of ‘career’

by considering how career is a political and social project which occurs in contexts that involve others

by examining important dimensions of career found within the career theory literature

by considering the notion of duality in such dimensions and how this evokes notions of ‘paradox’, which is argued to be an important mode of analysis of ‘career’

for students to apply the concepts within the chapter to their own ‘career’.
