ABSTRACT

Where is planning in twenty-first century Australia? What are the key challenges that confront planning? What does planning scholarship reveal about the state of planning practice in meeting the needs of urban and regional Australians? This chapter establishes the framework of critical essays assembled to consider the state of urban and regional planning in early twenty-first century Australia. It lays out the rationale underpinning the selection process and the structure of the critical commentary presented in this book. It also identifies the gaps in this framework and opportunities for future scholarship.
