ABSTRACT

Milieu does not feature prominently among the analytical concepts used in diversity studies. At the same time, it plays a signifi cant role in approaches within the social sciences that – contrary to approaches focusing on individual behaviour as isolated acts – focus either on the social organization of human life (i.e. milieu-concepts conceiving of society in terms of the things people do together) or on the subjective experience of the individual’s environment (be it other individuals or ‘things’). By adopting this perspective, diversity studies can benefi t from the use of milieu as a supplement or substitute of concepts like group, community, culture or category.
