ABSTRACT

Can terrorism be defeated or at least curbed? These questions have been consuming the attention of scholars since the beginning of the academic exploration of terrorism (Ganor 2005; Sageman 2014). In this chapter, we will review the Israeli experience over the last seven decades in order to offer some relevant insights regarding the political, strategic and social conditions which can facilitate the defeat or reduction of terrorism. However, before advancing to the analysis of the Israeli case study, we would like briefly to discuss the conceptualization of terrorism and counterterrorism.
