ABSTRACT

As one of the many approaches in the field of discourse studies, discourse theory mostly builds on two strands: the theoretical work of Foucault on the one hand, and Laclau and Mouffe on the other. Although related, these two discourse-theoretical strands have a considerable number of differences, in their theoretical elaborations and in their interpretations. In this chapter, I will focus on the latter strand which found its main manifestation in the 1985 book Hegemony and Socialist Strategy (HSS) (Laclau and Mouffe 1985).
