ABSTRACT
In 1952 I found myself on a ship from Bremen, Germany, to New York City. The ship, the USS General S. D. Sturgis , was a WWII troop carrier that was shuttling displaced persons from wartorn Europe to destinations around the world. Of the 15 million or so displaced persons living in refugee camps after the war, about a million were now being relocated to the United States, Canada, and Australia.
