Introduction

Mechanical philosophy is of ancient origin. For philosophers and scientists in many epochs, thinking about mechanisms has proven to be a fruitful way to understand nature. Although mechanical philosophy receded for much of the twentieth century, it is again resurgent; that is the occasion of this Handbook.
