ABSTRACT

In the last book written before he died in 2014 at the age of 85, planning guru Peter Hall reviewed cities across Europe and identified Freiburg and Stockholm as the two best planned on the continent (Hall 2014). Freiburg, he says, is ‘the city that did it all’. It has become a place of pilgrimage for planners and city leaders from across the world. In 2009 and 2010 we – the current authors – joined the throng, leading a mixed group of chief public health officers and planners from South West England. What impressed all those who went was not only the quality of the urban environment and the positive social atmosphere, but the fact that the principles of healthy urban planning were here made visible, and they worked (Figure 38.1).
