ABSTRACT

There is a growing ‘healthy urban planning’ movement in the UK and the complexity of the work has resulted in a plethora of networks for sharing good practice and learning which have more recently joined up to form a ‘network of networks’. Key organisations include Spatial Planning and Health Group (SPAHG), the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), the UK National Healthy Cities Network (UKHCN) and more recently the West Midlands Health and Planning Network. The authors of this chapter were amongst the founding members of both the West Midlands Healthy Urban Planning Network and the UK Healthy City Network which affiliates to the World Health Organization (WHO) European Healthy Cities Movement. This movement has contributed significantly to raising awareness of the impact of the natural and built environment on incidence of non-communicable disease in recent years (www.euro.who.int/en/home).
