ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to present and analyse some examples of tools and processes for community building, homes and place-making. Housing is recognised as a key determinant of health – in terms of availability, quality and user control (Barton and Tsourou 2000; Kreiger and Jacobs 2011). In some countries, such as the UK, the cost of housing to buy or rent, shortage of supply and lack of security in the rented sector, greatly exacerbates health inequalities. The results in terms of relative poverty, mental stress and low social capital are key factors in health inequalities (Marmot 2010).
