ABSTRACT

Latin American Studies (LAS) is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the history, literature, art, politics, and social structures of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries of the Western Hemisphere. In research and writing, “Latin Americanists” have tended to incorporate the findings of sister disciplines into their work. That interdisciplinarity is reflected in organizations such as the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) and the International Congress of Americanists, whose annual meetings feature panels composed of scholars from many disciplines.
