ABSTRACT

The concept of well-being is a complex and multifaceted expansion of the simple question, “How are you?” (Ryan & Deci, 2001). Early denitions of the concept focused on feeling or pleasure but now the list has grown quite considerably, to include aspects of knowledge, friendship, self-expression, economic security, health, and more (McGillivray, 2007). In this chapter on the relationship between media use, screen time, and well-being, we focus on the health dimension of well-being. We particularly hone in on physical activity and sedentary behavior associated with media use and its relationship to well-being.
