ABSTRACT
Prison as the visual location of punishment is in retreat. Walls now mask the old gatehouses whose intent it was to deter. New prisons take on the character of Augé’s (1995) ‘non-places’. They mimic a fortified office block by way of an airport waiting lounge. What then has happened to the visual aspect of the prison?
