ABSTRACT
On May 23, 2016, fifteen Chicago activists boarded a bus to Indianapolis and the Supreme Court of Indiana to hear the appeal in Purvi Patel v. State of Indiana. Purvi Patel, a woman of South Asian descent and an American citizen, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for feticide and child neglect after miscarrying her fetus in March 2015. Her sentencing caused international outcry for the criminalization of her abortion. She was also the first woman in the U.S. to be convicted and sentenced on feticide charges (Bazelon, 2015).
