ABSTRACT

Advancing technological and scientific innovation is a key component of national competitiveness strategies. The United States has a long and rich tradition in supporting scientific innovations via its National Science Foundation (NSF) grants and partnership with universities. Recent growth in both scientific and government data and computational technologies (National Science Foundation 2012) has made the provision of computational power a new engine to enable and accelerate scientific discovery. Recognizing the enabling potential, the U.S. NSF and the scientific community have been exploring the development of a cyberinfrastructure to aid in the depth and reach of scientific research since early 2000 (NSF TeraGrid Program 2011).
