ABSTRACT

My basic objectives in the analysis of history textbooks is to determine whether, and to what extent, history textbooks are a resource of cultural memory and how the presentation of some historical events in the material contained therein affects the teaching of historical awareness among students. The subjects of my research are the historical consciousness milestones for the Poles, which determine the essential phases of the cultural memory of the Polish nation and mutual Polish–Russian and Polish–German relations. The analysis included three events: 17 January 1945 in Warsaw, the Katyn Massacre of 1940 and the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.
