ABSTRACT
We write to store, to understand, and to communicate; and we visualize to store, to understand, and to communicate. However, we do this in different ways and with different outcomes. In verbal language we choose between different word classes, lexemes, and grammatical rules to produce sentences. In visual language, we use graphic means, for instance color, shape, size, and space. This chapter focuses on analytical approaches to visual communication with particular emphasis on data visualizations as graphical representations of various types of data.
