ABSTRACT

Across developed countries, the number of people currently incarcerated is at an historical high, following a 20% growth in the prison population since the turn of the century (Coyle, Fair, Jacobson & Walmsley, 2016). With more than 2.2 million prisoners, the United States alone has almost the same number of people incarcerated as China and Russia combined. In England and Wales, the prison population is approaching 86,000.
